De indirecte constructie is bijzonder omslachtig

Belangrijk is in elk geval de constatering dat consumenten vooral energiezuiniger worden wanneer zij direct hun energieverbruik kunnen aflezen op een gebruiksvriendelijk afleesvenster, dat op de meter kan worden aangebracht. De indirecte constructie in het Nederlandse voorstel om meetgegevens automatisch door te sturen naar de netbeheerder, die het vervolgens, al dan niet via derden, voor de consument inzichtelijk kan presenteren op een webpagina waarop een consument kan inloggen, is in dat licht niet alleen bijzonder omslachtig, maar vermoedelijk ook minder effectief als het gaat om energiebesparing.

A transition to an intelligent electricity grid in Europe can take place without smart meters, industry players have said, in comments that will embarrass the European Commission, which pushed a Europe-wide plan to roll out smart meters years ago.

There are other more efficient ways than smart meters to help develop intelligent power grids, said industry delegates at the annual convention of Europe’s electricity association Eurelectric, held in Vilnius last week.

Artikel van het bedrijf Sophos, over de presentatie van de Duitse onderzoekers van Münster University of Applied Sciences, 8 januari 2012:

They tested different appliances to demonstrate the unique signatures their power consumption show on the two second interval graphs. This data could identify when the refrigerator was running, when you may be home or away or even sleeping.

They then looked at electrical usage of plasma, LCD and CRT televisions and could see differences in power consumption based on the brightness levels displayed for different scenes in TV shows and movies.

Artikel Fraunhofer Instituut, 1 december 2016 spreekt over vingerafdrukken van apparaten:

The technology is based on a simple principle: each device has a pattern of energy consumption that gives rise to a type of signature or “fingerprint” within the power grid. Using algorithms, it is possible to identify this signature within total energy consumption, and so determine energy consumption rates for individual appliances.
